In 2015 I formed a new band called Positive People. This project is the start of a new chapter for me as I am focusing as much as possible on original material. To this end I wrote a bunch of new tunes and rewrote a few older ones. Here is a link to some MP3s of this material.
These recordings are demos and I am planning on re-recording them with the band this year. There are also a few more that I haven’t even recorded as demos yet. The music of Positive People is weighted heavily towards reggae but I don’t really want to focus only on that style of music. In the long run I would like to see Positive People develop into a fusion of reggae, jazz, funk, blues, jam band, and afro pop influences.
The core personnel in the band (in addition to myself) is my wife Julie on keys and vocals, Ezra Rugg on bass, Mike Bennett on drums, and Jordan Bennison on percussion. We also have possible subs/additions to the band: Lincoln Blake on piano, Gaylen Smith on bass, Mike Heat on drums, Jessica Rugg on vocals, and Glen Dubois on bass. Our two drummers are both schooled in African drumming which adds an exciting dimension to the music. In case you don’t know, Ezra is an awesome bassist. Julie is also adding some of her song writing to the mix.
I’m very excited about this project, primarily because of the focus on original material. I feel like in order to progress any further musically, I needed to start focusing on writing music and move away from cover tunes. I started by writing a slew of reggae tunes. Next I plan to write a batch of blues tunes, and eventually some jazz tunes with Julie for New Shades of Blue.
